Stripe has a feature called smarter saved cards that allows a card to continue to work even if the original card has been replaced by the bank. It means that if a donor acquires a new card, they won't have to manually re-enter or update their card details in order to keep donating. This requires no extra work from the organization or the donor and will work with most cards, including:
- MasterCard
- Discover
- Visa
Smarter saved cards is not available for American Express and there may be some cards where a card number or expiry update is needed. Some other cases where a card may be declined include:
- Insufficient funds
- The donor's bank declines the transaction
- The donor has switched to a different card company
